About the Position
As a Digital Accessibility Specialist at UNT’s Center for Learning Experimentation, Application and Research (CLEAR) for the last three years, I have served a critical role in ensuring that all students—regardless of ability—can fully engage with course content and digital tools. My work centers around evaluating the real-world usability and accessibility of a wide range of course materials and technologies from the perspective of a student navigating the course environment.
Currently, my primary responsibility is to ask, “If I were a student in this class, could I independently complete this assignment with the resources provided?” This question drives every review I conduct, and informs the recommendations I provide to faculty and instructional designers.
Bringing a user-centered perspective steeped in lived experience as a blind student and professional, enables me to anticipate and identify barriers others may overlook. Rather than solely focusing on compliance checklists, I prioritize functional accessibility: ensuring students can realistically complete assignments and engage meaningfully with their courses.
I systematically review and test course materials for accessibility and usability across platforms, including: PDFs; PowerPoint presentations; videos for captions; audio descriptions and accessible media players; interactive media; online textbooks and eBooks; and, software and websites.
